How do I switch from Flodesk to SendFox?

Put your active Flodesk subscribers in a segment, download its CSV, then upload it in Audience → Contacts → Import contacts and rebuild your forms. On every plan.

What comes across from Flodesk?

SendFox has no direct Flodesk connection, so you move your list with a CSV file: export it from Flodesk, then upload it to SendFox. SendFox reads the email address, first and last name if your file has them, and any column you map to a custom field you've created in SendFox. Other columns aren't imported.

SendFox adds every row of the file as a subscribed contact, and imported contacts don't get a confirmation email. Flodesk's CSV export always includes unsubscribed, bounced and spam-flagged contacts, so step 1 below needs one extra step to keep them out.

Importing works on every plan. The Free plan holds up to 1,000 contacts and sends 3,000 emails a month; for more, see Which SendFox Pro tier should I choose? Moving from another tool as well? See How do I switch to SendFox from another email platform?

How do I export my subscribers from Flodesk?

  1. In Flodesk, create an empty segment under Audience → Segments → + New segment, for example Active for export.
  2. Go to Audience → All subscribers, click Filter, then + Add filter → Status → Active.
  3. Tick Select all, choose Add to segment, pick your new segment and click Save. Make sure every result is selected, not just the first page.
  4. Open Audience → Segments, hover over that segment, click (…) and choose Download CSV.
  5. Flodesk emails the download link to your login address, and it expires after 24 hours.

If the email doesn't arrive and your Flodesk login uses a custom-domain address, Flodesk suggests temporarily changing your login email to a free provider such as Gmail, then exporting again.

How do I import the file into SendFox?

  1. Go to Audience → Contacts and click Import contacts.
  2. Click Upload a file and choose your Flodesk export.
  3. Map your columns. Email is required. To keep another Flodesk field, create the matching custom field in SendFox first. Columns you don't map aren't imported.
  4. Optionally add a tag such as from-flodesk under Tag them on import.
  5. Under Select a list for your new contacts, choose an existing list or name a new one, then click Continue & import contacts.

Files with fewer than 1,000 rows are added right away. Larger files run in the background, and SendFox emails you when the import is done.

How do I bring my Flodesk segments across?

Flodesk segments become tags in SendFox. SendFox doesn't read a segments column from a CSV file, so export one segment at a time:

  1. In Audience → All subscribers, filter by one segment and by Status → Active. Flodesk combines the two filters.
  2. Add the results to a new empty segment and download that segment's CSV, as in the steps above.
  3. Import the file into SendFox and type the segment name under Tag them on import. SendFox creates the tag if it doesn't exist yet.
  4. Repeat for each segment.

Subscribers already in SendFox aren't duplicated; they just get the new tag. See How do contact tags work?

If you sell subscriptions with Flodesk Checkout, they run on a Stripe account that Flodesk sets up only for Flodesk. Paid subscriptions can't be transferred to SendFox, so paying readers subscribe again through a SendFox paid newsletter, which needs Pro.

Move your paying readers before you change your Flodesk plan. If you cancel or downgrade your Everything plan, Flodesk immediately ends the active subscriptions tied to your checkout. See How do I move paid subscribers to SendFox?

What do I rebuild after importing?

Only contacts come across. Your past Flodesk emails stay in Flodesk, and the rest is rebuilt in SendFox:

  • Signup forms: create a SendFox form and remove the Flodesk form code from your site.
  • Workflows: recreate your Flodesk workflows as SendFox automations, one email and delay at a time.
  • Full page and Link in bio forms: rebuild them as Smart Pages and update your links.
  • Personalization: use SendFox's personalization tags, such as {{contact.first_name}}.
  • Sending domain: validate your domain so your emails come from your own address.

Troubleshooting

My import was blocked

  • A CSV file can have up to 100,000 rows. Split a larger file and import it in parts.
  • An import can't take you over your plan's contact limit. SendFox tells you before it starts, and only email addresses that are new to your account count toward the limit. On the Free plan, click Upgrade! in the top nav to see your options.

Fewer contacts arrived than I have in Flodesk

  • Check that every filtered result was added to the segment, not just the first page.
  • SendFox keeps one contact per email address and skips rows without a valid email address.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Flodesk subscribers get a confirmation email?

No. SendFox doesn't send a confirmation email to imported contacts, so import only people who subscribed to you.

Will my subscribers notice the switch?

Only in small ways: until you validate your domain, your emails send from a SendFox address, and on Free and Lifetime they carry a small SendFox badge in the footer (Pro removes it). Once you validate your domain, your emails come from your own address.
